Colin and Kieren’s story continues as they prepare like mental bastards for a painful journey to the top of a mountain… by running! All for a great cause.
So, we enter November with Kieren injured, but that is only a minor speed bump. Injuries will happen from time to time, but as we progress, we learn, and we will condition our bodies to cope with the challenge ahead.
While I continue with the usual Parkruns, 5kms and commutes to work, Kieren spends the first week in the gym, even participating in a ‘step’ class, which he decided “wasn’t for him”.
Kierens recovery went well so on the 7th he tested his knee with a slow half marathon, followed up with another half marathon 2 days later- in a very rapid 1 hour 34 minutes. A personal best!
Also on the 9th I went for a run with no plan in mind. I done my best Forrest Gump impression and “I just kept on running”. I completed my third ever half marathon – 1 hour 47 minutes
We fast forward through a week of steady 5km runs, and at 1:30am on Sunday 16th I pick up Kieren along with 2 other friends and I drive 5 hours to Llanberis, Wales.
We expected the worst with the weather, but we jumped out of the car to mild conditions and changed clothes in the car park. After a brief warmup we set off at 8:00am running half a mile to the foot of the mountain path.
Snowdon summit, here we come!
After 5 miles, an elevation of 960 meters and 1 hour 23 minutes we reach the top. It only takes 54 minutes to bounce back down, completing our 10 mile mountain run in 2 hours 17 minutes.
We are very pleased with our first attempt at running up a mountain as the average hike for this route is 6-8 hours.
The rest of the month continued with the usual 5km runs and gym work, as well as an enjoyable 10 mile trail run, where we got absolutely drenched.
